The India Post is a public postal system. Widespread distribution allows mail to provide additional services, such as financial. As of March 31, 2011, the Indian Postal Service has 154,866 post offices, of which 139,040 (89.78%) are in rural areas and 15 826 (10.22%) are in urban areas.
At the time of independence, there were 23,344 post offices in India, mainly in urban areas. Thus, the postal network showed a sevenfold growth, primarily due to rural areas. On average, the post office serves 21.23 km² and 7114 people. India has the most developed postal system in the world: China has 57,000 branches, Russia - 41,000, and the United States - 38,000. This number of post offices resulted from the existence of many disparate postal systems, ultimately combined within the framework of the Indian Union.
For more than 150 years, the Department of Posts (DoP) has been the backbone of the country's communication and has played a crucial role in the country's socio-economic development. It touches the lives of Indian citizens in many ways: delivering mails, accepting deposits under Small Savings Schemes, providing life insurance cover under Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) and providing retail services like bill collection, sale of forms, etc. The DoP also acts as an agent for Government of India in discharging other services for citizens such as Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) wage disbursement and old age pension payments. With 15 015 Post Offices, the DoP has the most widely distributed postal network in the world.
India is divided into 22 postal districts, headed by chief postmasters. Each district is divided into regions consisting of branches. Different regions have their own functional units responsible for postage stamps, warehouses and motorized transport. In addition, the Indian armed forces have their own postal district in addition to 22 civilian ones. Army mail is headed by a general director with the rank of major general.
