How do you get your package with US Mail Service delivered?

To the majority of destinations, the package will still come with tracking so that both the sender and recipient can keep an eye on the delivery.

The US Mail Service will then post your package internationally before the local Post Office in each destination makes the final delivery. We advise considering adding protection cover to the booking when shipping overseas, plus it is essential to provide a local working contact number so that Customs or the courier can reach out to the recipient should there be any issues with the delivery. How does US Mail Service Tracking work?

My Package Shipped By US Mail Service Shows No Tracking Information

It is normal for packages shipped through the Postal System to have little or no tracking information available. US Mail Service does not provide tracking for most services but instead provides delivery confirmation.

With delivery confirmation your package is usually only scanned when it arrives at your local post office and again at delivery. There is no pickup scan or other information that confirms your package was mailed.

Until your package arrives and is scanned at your post office you will see a message like the one below:

What's In Transit means in US Mail Service

If a shipment is “in-transit” then that means that carrier has scanned the package upon pickup and it is now en route to the end customer.

If a shipment stays ‘in transit’ for a prolonged period of time, it is possible it may have been delayed. There are many things that can delay an order past its original expected delivery date - poor road conditions, weather, and deliverability of the location are a few examples.

This status indicates that the package has left the carrier’s facility and is on its way to the end customer’s destination address.

What's Delivered means in US Mail Service

This status indicates the package has been delivered to the end customer. The package will have been dropped off and the tracking should note the delivery date/time.

If for any reason any package is unable to be delivered, one of the below statuses may be encountered:

  • Delivery Failure -This status indicates that the package was unable to be delivered for some reason (i.e.street number not found; no secure location available; no access; etc). Typically an order that fails to deliver will be returned to sender (explained below).
  • Return to Sender -This status indicates that US Mail Service attempted to deliver the package to the customer but was unable to complete delivery for some reason - generally a carrier tries multiple times to deliver a package before processing a return to sender.

What does Return to Sender means?

This status is essentially the same as the domestic one, but it is important to note that packages sent back from foreign countries may incur duties and taxes for the return (vendors are responsible for any duties or taxes incurred for a return). Depending on the fees, it may be beneficial to have the package disposed of at the destination country and another one sent in its place - this is of course up to the vendor’s discretion.

Inbound Out Of Customs Meaning?

Inbound out of customs means that your package has been released from US customs to the US Mail Service and it is being delivered to you. If the term is Outbound, that would mean that the package you sent has passed through customs and it’s on its way to another country.

What Do Customs Do?

What exactly happens to your package or mail while it is in customs, what happens behind those closed doors.

In the last year, around 650 million pieces of international mail went through the customs to enter the United States, coming from foreign countries. Almost all of this immense quantity of mail is accepted into the US through one of its five International Service Centers (ISC). The five ISCs are located in New York, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

International Service Centers (ISCs) distribute and dispatch international mail received from a designated service area to specific foreign countries or to gateway exchange offices. Each center has been recognized for global leadership in international mail processing with an International Post Corporation (IPC) Certificate of Excellence award. This award, based on a common global standard for excellence in mail processing, is a months-long process involving an operational survey, pre-certification, and the actual certification process.

The IPC is an association of 24 postal operators in Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region. IPC provides its members with systems and programs that ensure efficient and competitive delivery of international mail.

Does The Customs Clearance Process Work?

International mail in most cases ends up arriving at airports aboard certain inbound commercial carrier flights. When this thing happens, on the ground we have something called ground handlers (here, it depends a lot on the time the mail arrives at and on some different other factors, but these ground handles are usually either employees of the airline that delivered the mail, or, in other cases, outside contractors that are employed by the airlines).

These people are tasked with unloading the receptacles that contain mails and packages from inside the airplanes. Then, these same people take the mail and they take it to these ISC center that I mentioned above. While all these operations may sound sort of trivial, they are actually very important and they have to be done under a high degree of security.

US Mail Service employees are there in order to verify and monitor what the status of these international mail receptacles is. And they have to do this by completing reports that have become known under the name of ramp reports. Based upon these documents, anybody can find out instantly information about the mail, such as when it was sent, when it was scanned and assigned to a certain flight in its country of origin. Alongside this, you can also find the country where it came from, the airline on which it came on and the exact content and number of receptacles that are supposed to be brought to the ISC.

Then the mail goes through a process of verification, X-ray machines and other things like that, in order to make sure that it does not post any dangers for the postal workers that are handling it and eventually for the people that receive it. This is done in secure buildings and with the outmost care. And, as I am sure everybody knows, nobody is allowed to actually open your mail, that is confidential and opening it and breaching that trust is actually a federal felony. So checking your mail does not mean checking the actual contents of that mail, but the technical aspects of the mailing process and the safety of the packages.

Then and only then does mail enter into the final phase, where it is approved for the final delivery and can reach its original destination. If irregularities are found in the ramp reports or on the envelopes, or if the postal employees discover that the mail is eligible to poses certain risks, this process can take longer.

Other Tracking Statuses

There are some uncommon tracking statuses that may be seen when checking a package’s tracking. A few examples include the following:

Damaged in transit - This indicates that the package was damaged while being delivered. For this, a claim would be filed through the carrier to receive some type of compensation.

Uncontrollable customs delay - This occurs when a package routed internationally is held up at customs for some reason. Typically there is not much that can be done in this scenario, except for having the end customer pay any outstanding duties or taxes.

Missed “In Transit” pickup scans (applies to US Mail Service international) - Sometimes an internationally routed package sent via US Mail Service can stay stuck “in transit” for a long period of time and then all of a sudden update to “delivered.” It is important to note that since US Mail Service does not guarantee international tracking, packages sent out at this service level can lose tracking updates once it hits the destination country

Where do I find my tracking number?

Your tracking number can be found in the following places:

Delivery is typically within six to ten business days, depending on the origin and destination. Transit time between rural or remote areas may be longer. The service includes US Mail Service Tracking and free package pick-up where available. Insurance cover may also be purchased to protect items for up to $5,000, depending on the destination country. Rates start from $29.25 at Post Office locations. The exact price will depend on the dimensions, weight and destination of the item being sent. The maximum weight for sending an item by Priority Mail International is 70 pounds.

A Flat Rate service is also available for Priority Mail International. Free shipping supplies including envelopes and boxes may be ordered online or picked up at a Post Office location. When ready, the item can be dropped off at a mail box or at a local Post Office. Flat Rate Priority Mail International is available for large and medium boxes weighing up to 20 pounds. Flat Rate Envelopes and Small Flat Rate Boxes are also available for consignments weighing up to four pounds.

Items send with Priority Mail Express International are generally delivered within three to five business days in most major markets. The exact delivery time will depend on the origin and destination of the item. Priority Mail Express International is available from $35.25 at Post Office locations.

The service includes a variety of features, including free shipping supplies. Boxes, envelopes and other shipping supplies can be ordered online or at a Post Office. The service also includes US Mail Service Tracking at no additional cost. Priority Mail Express International also includes up to $100 insurance cover for documents and up to $200 for merchandise, as well as free package pick-up where available. Additional coverage may be purchased for up to $5,000, depending on the destination country. Guaranteed date-certain service and money-back guarantees are offered when sending items to Australia, China, France (excluding Corsica), Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Spain (excluding the Canary Islands) and the United Kingdom.

The Priority Mail Express Flat Rate option includes free envelopes and boxes for sending items to more than 180 countries. In addition to free shipping supplies, the service is available with no weighing or rate calculation when sending individual items. The envelope or box can be dropped off at a blue UPSP mail box or at a Post Office location. Recently, there has been a new event appearing on packages, "In Transit". This event appears on items that have not had an actual device scan them in 18 hours. This means that the item is possibly still in the plane, train or automobile (this reference may be lost on some), that it was put on for transport. It also can mean several other things.

  • It can mean its been offloaded, but not processed yet. Volume is high, and we can only move so fast. Machines break down, so do people. If you haven't paid for Priority Mail Express, you have no guarantee of service. Sorry, but that's the truth. No facility wants to "sit" on parcels at all, but when the workload exceeds the facility's capacity, it happens. If that happens enough in a short period, it can cause some significant backups.
  • All packages move in large metal containers. Each one has a barcode assigned to it. When a parcel is put into that container, it will be tied to that barcode. Any events scanned to that barcode then populate for the packages contained within. Sometimes these Barcodes get damaged in transit, so packages will go dark for a while, as unloading the cage and scanning each individual item is not efficient.
  • This scan does not necessarily mean your package has been stolen, destroyed, run over, tossed in a ravine. It can simply mean it got stuck in a pileup at a facility.
  • It can also mean it got stuck on a transport that broke down, or for some reason was legitimately delayed(foul weather for aircraft, severe weather for trucks). In my neck of the network, if we have a truck break down on the way from the plant in foul weather, it may delay the mail almost ten hours. Enough time to trigger an "in transit" event.

If waiting doesn't help,sStart an online inquiry through the US Mail Service website. It has a miraculous way of “shaking loose” stuck packages, or forcing a tracking update when one hasn’t posted. Often times you’ll get a response a few days later (after it shows delivery) saying it was delivered on X day. If it’s genuinely lost (it probably is not), you’ll at least know what’s happening.
